Patient safety
ONC today released - for comment - the Health IT Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan.
The plan builds on HHS' overall commitment to patient safety. The plan
addresses recommendations made in the 2011 Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Report, Health IT and Patient Safety: Building Safer Systems for Better Care.
It leverages the shared responsibility among HHS and private
organizations’ existing programs that are focused on using health IT to
improve patient safety to support a culture of safety. You can find the more information on Health IT and Patient Safety and the news release on HealthIT.gov. And remember that the comment period runs through Feb 4.

Many
of us know about the benefits of health IT systems and as more and more
doctors, hospitals and clinics install the software and hardware and
strive toward meaningful use and – ultimately – interoperability, even
more people will see many of these benefits.
Check out how EHR/EMR can:
- Improve quality and convenience of patient care
- Increase patient participation in their care
- Improve accuracy of diagnoses and health outcomes
- Improve care coordination
- Increase practice efficiencies and cost savings
Patient engagement workgroups formed
In
an effort to reach out to real flesh-and-blood patients and consumers
and help them understand the benefits of using electronic health
records, our Federal Advisory Committees have formed a pair of new work
groups: the HIT Policy Committee's Consumer Empowerment Workgroup and
the HIT Standards Committee's Consumer Technology Workgroup.
For more information on the Committees and Workgroups, please visit the ONC FACA Website.
Testing and Certification
After
a comprehensive public review and comment process, the 2014 Edition
Test Method was finalized and formally approved by the National
Coordinator on December 14, 2012. The 2014 Edition Test Procedures, Test
Data, and Test Tools are now available for use in testing and
certifying Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology under the ONC HIT
Certification Program (formerly referred to as the Permanent
Certification Program).
To access the 2014 Edition Test Method, please visit the 2014 Edition Test Method webpage.
